The Journaling Teacher: A Simple Habit That Changed My Life

Updated: Jan 23

Hey there, lovely people! Mr. Mc here, sharing another slice of my wellbeing journey.

Today, I want to talk about something that has truly transformed how I navigate the challenges of teaching and life— journaling. I know, I know. Journaling can seem like one of those “nice ideas” you’ll never actually get around to. I thought the same when I first tried it. But trust me, it’s so much more than just jotting down thoughts. It’s been a lifeline for me, especially during some of the hardest times in my life.

When I thought of journalling before I always imagined it being for people who have large knitted jumpers, maybe a roll neck, with the sleeves pulled down over their hands, clutching a coffee cup in one hand, nice pen and posh writing paper or book in their other hand, staring out a rainy window.... giving total main character energy!

I was wrong!

My Burnout Story - a quick dip!

2019...I took this picture on one of the worst days of my life. I had been crying on the way to work, I didn't want to be there, I felt alone. I barely made it through the day as I was so exhausted. I sat in work that day and I remember seeing that my XXXL shirt didn't fit me anymore. I was done.

Back in 2019, I hit rock bottom. I was burned out, exhausted, and doubting myself in ways I never had before. I was juggling the pressures of teaching, senior leadership, and just trying to keep up with life. On top of it all, my physical health was at its lowest, and I felt like I was stuck in a cycle I couldn’t escape.

In 2020 during the first lockdown I got myself an online coach and during that time, be introduced me to journaling. At first, it felt like just one more thing to add to my already overflowing plate. But as I began to write regularly, I noticed something incredible—it helped me manage my thoughts, even on those really tough and tiring days at work.

How Journaling Helped Me!

On the hardest days, journaling became my safe space—a way to process the overwhelm, let go of the negativity, and reconnect with what truly mattered. Before bed, I would reflect on my day, pulling out the small wins or moments of gratitude that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.

In the mornings, journaling helped me set intentions and ground myself. It was like hitting a mental reset button, giving me the clarity I needed to face the day ahead—even when it felt like everything was piling up.

Journaling didn’t just help me survive; it helped me thrive. It gave me the mental clarity to focus on the positives, no matter how small, and the strength to keep going when things felt overwhelming.

Making It Work: Habit Stacking

I get it—teachers are BUSY.

Finding time for anything extra can feel impossible. That’s where habit stacking comes in.

Here’s my simple trick:

  • At night, I place my journal on my pillow with a pen. That way, I can’t forget to write before bed.

  • In the morning, it moves to the kitchen table next to my coffee cup, ready for me to use.

This little system makes journaling part of my daily routine—effortless and automatic

A Resource for You: Change your habits, change your life! x

To make journaling easier for fellow teachers, I’ve created a handout packed with prompts to guide you. Whether you’re navigating a tough season or just looking for a way to stay grounded, these prompts are here to help.

Download it at the end of this blog post!

Here’s a sneak peek:

Morning Prompts

  • What’s one thing I’m looking forward to today?

  • How will I handle challenges calmly and positively?

  • What small step will I take today to support my physical health?

Evening Prompts

  • What moments of joy or gratitude did I experience today?

  • How did I look after my mind and body?

  • What’s one thought I can release to sleep peacefully?

These questions are designed to help you reflect, refocus, and recharge, no matter what kind of day you’ve had.

Let’s Support Each Other

I know how tough teaching can be, especially when you’re carrying the weight of a hard day. Journaling helped me find light in the darkest moments, and I truly believe it can help you too.

If you decide to give it a try, I’d love to hear how it’s working for you! Let’s share our experiences, cheer each other on, and keep growing together.

Here’s to taking small steps, embracing the journey, and living life as the best version of yourself.
